Found a link on [livejournal.com profile] ozarque’s journal to the Free Rice Vocabulary Game. Their advertisers pay to donate ten grains of rice through the United Nations for every word you guess correctly. Deplorable really, that this is the way the world is run, but the game is fun (for word nuts, anyway). Keep guessing words correctly and they start ranking you, and then you go up a rank for every three words you get correct, but down a rank when you get one wrong. There ought to be something to tell you that fifty is the highest rank, though – I spent some time trying to get past it. And once you accumulate about 2,500 grains of rice, the same questions start to reappear: including the ones you have already got right. Still, at least it gives you a chance to get right the ones that you previously got wrong.

I now know that ‘pavid’ means fearful. And ‘luxate’ means to dislocate. And a ‘callithump’ is a parade. Also a ‘collembolan’ is a springtail – and I don’t know what either of those things are, I shall have to look them up.
